The Story of Pete DeBisschop and Pop’s Pizza

From the Hardwood to West Main Street: The Story of Pete DeBisschop and Pop’s Pizza

In a town that values both tradition and local pride, few stories capture the spirit of Cheshire quite like that of Pete DeBisschop. Known to many today as the face behind a beloved West Main Street eatery, DeBisschop’s journey began not in a kitchen, but on the basketball court—where he built a reputation as one of Cheshire’s most accomplished athletes.

A Dominant Presence at Cheshire High

Graduating from Cheshire High School in 1979, DeBisschop stood out—literally and figuratively. At 6’11”, he was an imposing center with a strong inside game, capable of controlling the paint on both ends of the floor. His size and scoring ability made him one of the most highly regarded local prospects of his era, drawing attention beyond Connecticut.

Collegiate Success at Fairfield University

DeBisschop continued his basketball career at Fairfield University, where he played for the Stags from 1979 to 1983. Over four seasons, he developed into a consistent offensive and defensive force. His senior year marked the peak of his collegiate career, averaging 19.4 points and 8.5 rebounds per game—numbers that placed him among the top performers in the region and solidified his professional prospects.

NBA Opportunity and Professional Play

In 1983, DeBisschop reached a milestone few athletes achieve: he was selected in the fourth round

(86th overall) of the 1983 NBA Draft by the Seattle SuperSonics. While his NBA tenure was brief, he made a notable impression during preseason play, including a standout 21-point performance against the Houston Rockets and their highly touted top draft pick, Ralph Sampson.

DeBisschop went on to continue his professional career in the Continental Basketball Association, suiting up for teams such as the Albuquerque Silvers and the Tampa Bay Thrillers. His time in the CBA reflected the persistence and adaptability required of players navigating the competitive world of professional basketball during that era.

A New Chapter: Pop’s Pizza

After his basketball career, DeBisschop returned home to Cheshire and took on a different kind of challenge—opening a small business. In 1986, alongside his grandfather, he founded Pop's Pizza on West Main Street. What began as a modest venture quickly grew into one of the town’s most enduring establishments.

Pop’s Pizza became known for its consistent, “old-fashioned” approach to pizza-making. DeBisschop earned the nickname “Pizza Pete” for his hands-on style and insistence on maintaining the same dough and sauce recipes over decades. The menu expanded over time to include specialty pies like Buffalo Chicken and Mac and Cheese, along with stuffed breads and grinders that have become local favorites.

A Community Fixture

More than just a restaurant, Pop’s Pizza has become part of Cheshire’s social fabric. In 2017, it was
featured on FOX61’s “Foodie Friday,” highlighting its status as a regional staple. By 2026, the business celebrated its 40th anniversary—an achievement that speaks to both its popularity and consistency.

DeBisschop himself remains deeply connected to the community. Beyond running the restaurant, he is known for supporting local youth sports, often serving as an announcer and mentor. His presence reflects the same team-oriented mindset that defined his playing days.

Legacy On and Off the Court

From high school standout to professional athlete, and from entrepreneur to community figure, Pete DeBisschop’s path is a testament to adaptability and hometown loyalty. His story illustrates how success can take many forms—and how, in Cheshire, even a former NBA draft pick can become best known not just for points scored, but for slices served.
